Hanover was one of the original parishes, created in 1703. Described by William Beckford in 1790 as possessing the “most securest harbour of the world” possessed 16, 000 slaves, between 40 to 50 houses, 81 sugar works and 63 settlements.
The following are last names of the earliest European and North American families that settled in the parish during the 18th century. It also incorporated the parish of Westmoreland until the year 1723.
